International spelling for Globish Ideas for investigation
People who are not native speakers of English often want to improve the English language. Let the Anglophones keep their present language, while the rest of the world comunicates with each other in an improved version! This is understandable.
Three current ideas about how to do this are Globish, by Frenchman Jean-Paul Nerrière's Globish, the earlier Globish to accompany the roman script for Indian languages, by Indian Madhukar Gogate of India, and Basic Global English by Joachim Grzega of Germany.
My work as an Australian clinical child psychologist has been so much involved with children and adults with language problems, both Australian, immigrant and overseas, that I have always been interested in how the English language could be given a basic form for international use, by regularizing irregular grammar, clarifying verb forms and identifying metaphors and idioms as such.
My concern is with the relation of the written and spoken language. It is surprising how little attention is paid to the spelling system in teaching English as a foreign language, yet most non-Anglophones who use English cannot read or write it beyond a few phrases. Nor can they cope with IPA and other codes for pronunciation. Yet if the written language can be used to help learn the spoken language, and vice versa, as with say Italian or Indonesian, what benefits there would be - not least for education at home as well as overseas. It has been demonstrated that Anglophone children take three years longer than German and Italian speakers to learn to read and write adequately.
Improved English for international use must surely include improved English spelling, to use to show pronunciation, at least. Here, for example, is the 1500 word vocabulary of the French Globish, allowing plenty of latitude for broadband vowels and 'pronunciation spelling'. Try it out, and see what helps English language learners, and what still needs improvement.
As far as possible, the spellings are both consistent and intuitive, but there is a key to it below and further details on http:/home.vicnet.net.au/~ozreadandspell/sp7princ.htm, which is also linked to other pages giving a background about English spellng and other writing systems, at http:/home.vicnet.net.au/~ozreadandspell/spelling.htm.
Some browsers do not show the grave accents that are used to indicate the long vowels,A E I O U, or show strange symbols instead. Let me know if there are problems. I will have to resort to alternative representations, which include the 'silent-e tactic. At some stage I hope to improve the setting out of the tables below.
French GLOBISH - web page jpn-globish.com. Vocabulary
Indian GLOBISH - http://www.mngogate.com/e02.htm
German BASIC GLOBAL ENGLISH http://www.grzega.de/
TABLE 1. The 1500 words vocabulary of the French Globish, in spelling which is also the key to pronunciation - Interspel 'Spelling for reading without traps for lerners'.
In red are the spellings which need no change from present standard spelling.
Diacritic acsents are not essential exept for lerners, who can also hav the -shn suffix replacing -tion. '
Silent e' is admissabl to sho long vowels.
'c' can have 2 pronunciations.
Other principls may be intuitivly understood.
